Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap

There were no words

We were practicing softball inside. We were closing up, in the same circle we start and end practice with. One of my girls, Amanda* said, “I think my Aunt has cancer”.

The gym was completely silent. I had this awful knot in my chest. I know it’s my job to say something like that when those things happen, but I was speechless. There just never seems to be words that can heal when something like that happens.

Then Brittney asked, “Does anyone mind if we have a moment of silence?” The girls shook their heads and said no, and looked to us coaches. We both nodded. All of the gloves hit the floor at the same time, and we reached out towards one another.
